The RAMOGE Agreement at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC)

From 9 to 13 June, RAMOGE was in Nice for the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, alongside governments, NGOs, scientists and local stakeholders.

Opening & panels – blue zone: RAMOGE attended the official opening of the Plenary Assembly, in the presence of numerous Heads of State, as well as several panels addressing, among other topics, the importance of deep-sea ecosystems and regional cooperation to combat pollution and preserve biodiversity.

Mediterranean Day – Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen: On this occasion, Cyril GOMEZ, Deputy Director of the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, highlighted RAMOGE’s contribution, mentioning its expertise in combating marine pollution and its role as a bridge between France, Italy and Monaco.

25th anniversary of the Pelagos Agreement – La Baleine area: During this side event, RAMOGE highlighted the various axes of cooperation developed since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in 2024.

Support for initiatives to better protect cetaceans: RAMOGE took part in the launch of the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative II, a major step forward in cetacean research and conservation in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. In addition, it welcomed the creation of the Pelagos Consortium, bringing together 13 partners to strengthen the governance of the sanctuary, supported by H.S.H. Prince Albert II.

Event on board the Alfred Merlin: On 12 June, RAMOGE gathered the delegations and authorities of the three States of the Agreement on board the DRASSM’s remarkable research vessel, the Alfred Merlin. This vessel will be deployed in the next RAMOGE deep-sea exploration campaign, scheduled for late 2025 or early 2026. The event offered the opportunity to visit the ship, the robotics room, and attend a conference by the mission leaders, sharing past discoveries and the objectives of the upcoming campaign.

INTERREG MARITIMO – CAP’M project: In Menton, RAMOGE took part in the steering committee dedicated to the management of marine protected areas between Cap Martin and Capo Mortola. The next RAMOGE exploration campaign will partly focus on this area, to improve knowledge and protect its species.
